2011 Annual
Cohn-Rives Society Lectureship
February 7, 2011
Cohn Rives Membership
It is that time of the year again where we reach out to
the members of the Cohn Rives Society to encourage your
attendance at the upcoming 2011 Annual Society Meeting,
which will be March 25 – 26, 2011. The 2010 meeting was a
huge success with the introduction of new aspects which we
intend to continue in the 2011 agenda. I am pleased to
announce that Dr. Julie Freischlag has agreed to serve as
the 47th annual visiting professor. Dr. Freischlag is the
William Stewart Halsted Professor and the Chair of the
Department of Surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of
Medicine in Baltimore. She will follow the traditional
conference schedule of meeting with the residents and
students Friday morning and presenting her lecture at 4:00
p.m. The title of this year’s lecture is “Clinical and
Personal Comparative Effectiveness”.
We will continue with the CME function for members of the
Society on Friday morning beginning at 8:00 a.m. The
lecture will be by the Hon Charles Boustany, an alumni of
the LSU Surgery program who is currently representing the
Acadiana region in the US Congress. His talk is titled “An
Update on Healthcare Reform”. This will be followed by
breakout sessions in both General Surgery and Plastic
Surgery. The General Surgery component will be a lecture
by Dr. Gregory Mancini on Component Separation and
Complex Hernia Repair followed by a skills session,
while Plastic Surgery will be presented by Dr. George De
la Torre on Endobrow Indication and Techniques and
Facial Rejuvenation.
The resident case presentations will be on Saturday
morning with a question and answer session chaired by Dr.
Freischlag as is our tradition. The meeting will end
around noon on Saturday. A total of 9 CME Category 1
credits will be available if participating in all aspects
of the meeting.
This year, the banquet will be housed in the Ritz-Carlton
Hotel. The Sweet 16 NCAA basketball tournament is in New
Orleans that weekend, and we have been able to secure a
limited number of block rooms in both the Ritz and
Iberville Suites at reduced rates, so make your
reservations early. The banquet will be held on Friday
night following last year’s agenda as this seemed to be
successful.
On another note, the Society plans to reintroduce The
Craighead Lecture this year. The guest lecturer will be
Dr. Duke Cameron. The topic will be on Thoracoabdominal
Aneurysms and will be held on May 19, 2011. More
details will be forthcoming, but mark your calendars now
and save the date.
The Cohn Rives website is up and running. The address is
www.cohnrivessociety.com. Feel free to utilize the website
to maintain contact with the Society. I hope that each of
you will be able to attend this year’s meeting. If you
have any questions, please feel free to contact me at
dfrey@lsuhsc.edu or
on my cell at 337-296-2436. I look forward to seeing each
of you at the Society dinner on Friday evening.
Sincerely,

Daniel J.
